Open Value – Surprisingly good for spread payments
There are 2 things which hit us hard with perpetual ownership licencing:
- Big upfront cost;
- Stuck to Version, eg 2013/2014, (no upgrade to 2016) especially these days of quicker releases.
This is especially true with SQL, SharePoint and Windows Server – these systems need to keep up with a more connected landscape.
Frankly, it’s rare for customers to buy the additional Software Assurance (SA) when they are already shocked by the new server licence costs – thousands instead of hundreds in “the old days”. That causes double unpleasantness when later they want to upgrade but can’t.
How can we help? Arranging MS Open Value will allow you to own the perpetual licences (use them forever) but spread the cost over 3 years whilst including SA – so you get the Version upgrades during that period as well as other benefits (depending on product – some are better than others and the devil is in the detail!). For example (prices change – see main product pages):
Open Licence: SQL Server Standard 2016 2 x 2-pack (4 Cores): £5,600 + £2,800 2-year SA = £8,400 upfront (ouch!).
OR
Open Value: £3,200 each of 3 years = £9,600 total.
So although it seems like paying extra for the financing (£1.2K difference), you’re actually getting an additional 1 year’s SA (costing £2.8K per year), so it works out substantially less – plus you have hugely spread the cost! You’d be crazy not to!
